Q: Why did you build a conversion van with 2 slide outs? A: After owning several types of RVs including a travel trailer, toy hauler & pop-up campers we decided it was time for something different. Since our girl is now an adult and off to college, it is now just the 2 of us. We wanted to do more traveling rather than just camping. A class B van made a lot of sense for this. But class B vans also have a big trade off, lack of room.      We came up with a list of things we wanted for our van (like a large refrigerator, full bath, a queen bed ) and things we didn't want (like an air conditioner or vent over the bed and a bed that you have to assemble and make up every night). Needless to say, nothing on the market came close. So with my extensive background including refurbishing RV's in the past, we decided to build our own.      The best way to make room for everything was to use slide outs. The only concept that really seemed to gain a lot was to make the bathroom a slide out unit. This was a huge design challenge. After a lot of thought and 3D CAD models, a working concept was created. And to our delight, it works great.

Q: How much did it cost to build? A: I have about $30K in materials, not counting labor and items I re-purposed from an older Star Craft travel trailer I already had (or the van itself).

Q: How long did it take to build? A: I purchased a new 2019 Ram Promaster in 2020 that I got a really good deal on. I then started building this in mid 2020. It was pretty much just a weekend project at that point. I calculate I have over 1100 hours in the build, although some of that was designing, planning and testing. It has gone through about 3 iterations. The first was a minimal build (not much finish work) so that we could try it out and use it. It didn't have the outdoor kitchen, heating system and PCAN for example. Later iterations included adding more features like the outdoor kitchen. The last iteration so far is the final finish work. I will still be doing more upgrades such as a lighting controller, Macerator waste dump, auto wind for hose and power reels, and more. Q: What is the van model and why did you choose it? A: The build was made using a 2019 Ram Promaster 2500. Every model has pros and cons. The main consideration was for the slide outs. The Promaster, due to it's design and construction, was the only platform that, in my opinion, worked for this.
